Wanted: the media that we need

It is evident that I did not understand the concept of the question of blog #2 and after reading some of my classmate’s blog it is clear that a lot of us believe that we receive the media we want rather than the media we need.

To differentiate the two, the media we want is the media we currently get is based on consumerism and what the next best thing is to buy. It is also based a lot on what our “reality” is or should be as Adelina states in her blog (http://adelina23.wordpress.com/2013/10/25/1f25-blog-post-2-the-media-we-want/). She talks about reality shows telling our society that being rich and having all the best thing will make us happy and that means we are normal and good in society, however in reality a lot of us struggling and need love and human interaction to be happy instead of just money and items.

Divya states a very important point when she says “Although, some may say they do not part take in any media source, our daily lives are always affected by what goes on in the world around us” (http://divyaasharma.wordpress.com/2013/10/24/blog-2-do-we-get-the-media-we-want-or-the-media-we-get/). This statement answers the question if the media better informs you about important social, political, cultural and or economic matters. In most cases, yes it does. However the media only shares what they think is important therefore it is hard to say what information really is usful to the world and the people the society.

Another point that was made by Efe, really caught my attention. He said “Previously we the audience/viewers had no input to what was offered to us, we accepted anything that was given to us, but lately it seems like the audience is now in control of the media. We choose what information we want and if it isn’t to our requirements/liking, we totally ignore it” (http://eo09tm.wordpress.com/2013/10/25/blog-entry-2/). It was interesting that he says we had no say in the media but now we control it… I agree with him to an extent. I don’t really believe we as the people control the media however the media gears itself toward what we as whole enjoy entertainment wise and also focuses on which ways they can sell people their products. So in a sense we control the media in the fact that they gear what messages they send out based on what they think we like and want so that we will buy their products or watch their shows.

So when posed with the question “is the media we want the same as the media we need”, essentially the answer is that they really are the same. The media want is what we get and essentially what we need because we are so used to getting it if we were to lose it a lot of people would be lost.
